In this anniversary issue, we propose to revisit the typologies derived from scientific literature and examine their role in the institutionalization of the roles and competencies of communication professionals. We provide a historical overview of the evolution of these typologies over the past fifty years. This literature review highlights the progressive expansion of the skills and roles assumed by communication professionals and, subsequently, the depth of competencies—both human and reflexive—that have enriched more recent typologies. In the discussion, we explore how this evolution in the spectrum of competencies is reflected in the dissemination of the annual survey results from the European Communication Monitor (from 2008 to 2018), which are highly regarded by professionals. We observe the predominance of the figure of strategic excellence in communication within these discourses and advocate for greater diversity in the typologies highlighted to professionals, reflecting the diversity of their realities.
