The return of wolves in France has led to what can be considered as a moral panic. We first show that this moral panic not only triggers public debate and action as well as different forms of social control, but also has noticeable effects on those who are labelled as deviant. Those effects can be observed in the daily professional routine of sheep farmers and shepherds as well as in their personal life (non-professional sociabilities and at home). Even though farmers and shepherds are not short of resources to try to fight back against this labelling processes, we show that they mostly resort to what James C. Scott calls the arts of resistance, or the weapons of the weak.
