In Ivory Coast, epidemiological data shows an increase in cancer incidence since the 1990’s. Breast and cervical cancer are the most frequent cancers in the population. Ivorians consider these illnesses as "White people’s disease" associated to the unknown or a lethal threat. 80 % of gynecological cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage and survival rates after five years are under 30 % for breast cancer and 22 % for cervical cancer. This local context questions the "chronicity" of cancer, used by oncology and public health international norms (WHO). This paper explores several forms, significations and representations of the chronic nature of cancer in the Abidjan context, according to the different actors, healthcare workers and women with cancer.
