This paper examines the political importance of the past in a very active organization in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico: the local branch of the National Union of Education Workers. Confronting the memory of past mobilizations that exists at the center of this group, this analysis examines how history is engaged on both the individual and collective levels. Ethnographic research is used to show how these memories, when studied in their social and political context, can provide important insight into the political life of this organization.
