Abstract

We propose a semiotics of the stars, which translates its transversality.

The aims of our model are 1. To provide a whole semiotics analysis framework for the study of a star and 2. To build an interface allowing a dialogue between various theoretical approaches.

We considers the star as a singular and sublimated example of a life form – that is to say : a significant way of disposing and acting. We consider that is why star is an important element of cultural mediation and, moreover, it explains why star is a economical and political valuable subject.

This life form is manifested through a “character” – a practical and moral figure sketched out over the course of the star’s career -, and also through a “brand” work – the impact of this “character” in the film industry as well as in the public space.

So, we will present the main lines of this model – which adapts the semiotics of life forms and the semiotics of brands, and which articulates these two semiotics – and we will illustrate it with a brief case analysis – Tom Cruise – to enable the reader to appreciate its possibilities and limits.
