Abstract

As a follow-up to the recent edition of the Syriac version of several homilies of Gregory of Nazianzus, by J.-C. Haelewyck and A.B. Schmidt, the present paper begins to explore the pos-sible contribution the indirect tradition of the Syriac homilies can make to our knowledge of the development of the text between the earliest translation (S1) and the revision by Paul of Edessa (S2). Our analysis of the quotations of Homily 40, “On Baptism”, in Peter of Kallini-kos’s Treatise against Damian, shows not only that the quotations reflect the intermediate ver-sion (Sm), between S1 and S2, but also that their author may have played an active role in the process of revision leading up to the version S2.
