John bar Penkaye is one of the representatives of the East Syriac ascetical and mystical tradition. His Book of the Merchant was originally made up of seven centuries, but only two of them have survived. The articles provides for the first time an edition of the Syriac text, together with a French translation. The text is deliberately enigmatic but has themes in common with other of John’s contemporaries and also with Evagrius Ponticus.
