During the XVIIIth dynasty, the expansion of Egyptian power over Nubia led the pharaohs to create and develop an administrative system assuring their control on the region. The viceroy, head of this administration, represented the king in the conquered southern territories. Since 1920, Egyptologists made many discoveries and theories about the identity and the career of those viceroys. Recent publications on the matter invite us to rethink their chronology of succession. The main points to be discussed are the identity of the first viceroy and the dating of less-known characters such as Se, Penre and Amenemnekhu. By confronting existing theories, recent discoveries and renewed studies of the sources left by those viceroys, this paper aims to provide a summary of our knowledge of viceroyalty during the XVIIIth dynasty.
