Thanks to coal and iron, Wallonia was from 19th till the second half of 20th century one of the most prosperous regions of Europe. Heavy industries have created thousand of jobs,
however the hard pay and working conditions that very strong Trade Unions fought and succeeded to improve. This has deeply printed its history and the culture of its population and leaders.
