Abstract

Coriago and ἐχεδερμία (echedermia) are used by Columella, Apsyrtos, Chiron, and Vegetius to describe a pathological condition of the skin in cattle and horses, in which the skin adheres to the body and cannot be pulled away or softened by massage : these terms noticed emaciation, desiccation, and muscle atrophy (in case of a chronic shoulder pain). They actually indicate a symptom of numerous diseases, identified or not, long considered as a particular disease with its own treatments, and which remained incurable when the cause was unknown (Eumelos, Apsyrtos, Chiron, Theomnestus), and it remained incurable. Veterinarians have developed the etiology, borrowing from medicine its physiological explanations (digestive process) and its terminology (syntexis).
