The purpose of this collection is to offer concise descriptions of the scholars and literati who contributed to teaching at European universities or were members of academies, from their inception to the eve of the Industrial Revolution (1800).
Each volume adds value by providing a quantitative analysis of the scholars from a specific institution, spanning a longue durée and encompassing the whole of Europe. This approach offers a fresh perspective on the history of each institution. While not intended to replace in-depth qualitative historical studies, each issue introduces a new analytical angle for understanding the development of these institutions.
This collection has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 883033 “Did elite human capital trigger the rise of the West? Insights from a new database of European scholars”.
